Established in the mid-1940's under
the Huntingburg Teenage Canteen, Inc., this non-profit organization
set for the the objective to offer social functions for young people
in Dubois County. During the first few decades, the Canteen held
dances in a variety of locations before moving to its current home
in the 1970's. Due to age dire need of repairs and a shortage of
funds, the Canteen closed in 1991.
In 1998 with the Youth Board Council
eager toe reopen the facility a grant of $ 100,000 was secured by
the Huntingburg Foundation from the Lilly Foundation, as well as
countless donations from local businesses and citizens, this opened
the door to revitalize and refurbish the 10,000 square foot facility
as it is today. Volunteer efforts allowed for the doors to reopen in
October 1999 to all local teens.
In April 2006, the facilities were
again upgraded and modernized, a trend that will continue so long as
the Teen Outback is fit with active volunteers and gracious donors.
While the center is open to many organizations and private events
for rent, the main focus is for the support of our local teens to
have a safe, drug and alcohol free alternative place to socialize.
